It goes without saying these days that social media is an important factor in any business, but how much is not really know by all. As with many statements they just need to be followed up with stats and here they are:

* More than half of the world's population is under 30.

* 50% of mobile Internet traffic in the UK is on Facebook.
* During the 4+ minutes it takes to watch the video, more than 100 hours' worth of video will be uploaded to YouTube.
* Amazon sold more electronic books for the Kindle than physical books on Christmas.
* If you were paid $1 for each posted Wikipedia article, you'd make $1,712.32 per hour.
* Over 50% of the world's population is under 30 years old
* Social media has overtaken pornography as the #1 web activity
* 1 out of 8 married couples met via social media
* 80% of companies use social media for recruitment

I did some work recently for a Ning client, and what they wanted was, instead of having to select members to feature, they wanted an embedded widget on the front page, which just selected a random one. Significantly, it had to be someone who had filled in some of the profile details, and who had added a profile picture.
